But Today, He is watching me....

Bob Richard, the former pole-vaults champion, share a moving story about a skinny young boy who loved football with all his heart. Practice after practice, he eagerly gave everything he had. But being half the size of the other boys, he got absolutely nowhere.

At all the games, this hopeful athlete sat on the bench & hardly ever played. This teenager lived alone with his father, & the two of them had a very special relationship. Even though the son was always on the bench, his father was always in the stands cheering. He never missed a game.

This young man was still the smallest of the class when entered high school. But his father continued to encourage him but also made it very clear that he did not have to play football if he didn't want to. But the young man loved football & decided to hang in there. He was determined to try his best at every practice, & perhaps he'd get to play when he became a senior.

All through high school he never missed neither a practice nor a game but remained a bench warmer all four years. His faithful father was always in the stands, always with words of encouragement for him. When the young man went to college, he decided to try out for the football team as a "walk-in." Everyone was sure he could never make the cut, but he did. The coach admitted that he kept him on the roster because he always puts his heart & soul to every practice, & at the same time, provided the other members with the spirit & hustle they badly needed.

The news that he had survived the cut thrilled him so much that he rushed to the nearest phone & called his father. His father shared his excitement & was sent season tickets for all the college games. This persistent young athlete never missed practice during his four years at college, but he never got to play in a game.

It was the end of his senior football season, & as he trotted onto the practice field shortly before the big playoff game, the coach met him with a telegram. The young man read the telegram & he became deathly silent. Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, "My father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today?" The coach put his arm gently around his shoulder & said, "Take the rest of the week off, son. And don't even plan to come back to the game on Saturday."

Saturday arrived, & the game was not going well. In the third quarter, when the team was ten points behind, a silent young man quietly slipped into the empty locker room & put on his football gear. As he ran onto the sidelines, the coach & his players were astounded to see their faithful teammate back so soon. "Coach, please let me play. I've just got to play today," said the young man. The coach pretended not to hear him. There was no way he wanted his worst player in this close playoff game. But the young man persisted, & finally feeling sorry for the kid, the coach gave in. "All right," he said. "You can go in."

Before long, the coach, the players & everyone in the stands could not believe their eyes. This little unknown, who had never played before was doing everything right. The opposing team could not stop him. He ran, passed, locked, & tackled like a star. His team began to triumph. The score was soon tied. In the closing seconds of the game, this kid intercepted a pass & ran all the way for the winning touchdown. The fans broke loose. His teammates hoisted him onto their shoulders. Such cheering you never heard.

Finally, after the stands had emptied & the team had showered & left the locker room, the coach noticed that this young man was sitting quietly in the corner all alone. The coach came to him & said, "Kid, I can't believe it. You were fantastic! Tell me what got into you? How did you do it?" He looked at the coach, with tears in his eyes, & said, "Well, you knew my dad died, but did you know that my dad was blind?" The young man swallowed hard & forced a smile, "Dad came to all my games, but today was the first time he could see me play, & I wanted to show him I could do it!"

A Forever Friend

Sometimes in life, you find a special friend;
Someone who changes your life, just by being part of it.
Someone who makes you laugh until you can't stop;
Someone who makes you believe that there really is good in the world.
Someone who convinces you that there really is an unlocked door just waiting for you to open it.
This is Forever Friendship.

When you're down, and the world seems dark and empty,
Your forever friend lifts you up in spirit
and makes that dark and empty world suddenly seem bright and full.
Your forever friend gets you through the hard times, the sad times, and the confused times.
If you turn and walk away, your forever friend follows.
If you lose your way, your forever friend guides you and cheers you on.
Your forever friend holds your hand and tells you that everything is going to be okay.
And if you find such a friend, you feel happy and complete, because you need not worry.
You have a forever friend for life, and forever has no end.

Tell them...

Around the corner I have a friend,
In this great city that has no end,

Yet the days go by and weeks rush on,
And before I know it, a year is gone.
And I never see my old friends face,
For life is a swift and terrible race,
He knows I like him just as well,
As in the days when I rang his bell.
And he rang mine but we were younger then,
And now we are busy, tired men.
Tired of playing a foolish game,
Tired of trying to make a name.
"Tomorrow" I say! "I will call on Jim
Just to show that I'm thinking of him."
But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes,
And distance between us grows and grows.
Around the corner, yet miles away,
"Here's a telegram sir," "Jim died today."
And that's what we get and deserve in the end.
Around the corner, a vanished friend.

Remember to always say what you mean.
If you love someone, tell them.
Don't be afraid to express yourself.
Reach out and tell someone what they mean to you.
Because when you decide that it is the right time it might be too late.
Seize the day.

Never have regrets.
And most importantly, stay close to your friends and family,

for they have helped make you the person that you are today.

Before Speak, Ask...
