Wo……Woo……

The Sub-prime Money Trail

You might be wondering about the recent market volatility and its relationship to your bank account, specifically, your stock portfolio. Well, to those who have not follow closely to the US market, here is a simple trail that can lead you back all the way to the beginning. I call it the 'Subprime Money Trail'. Enjoy the ride!

It all started out when subprime borrowers have bad credit records, and cannot easily get a standard loan package with the banks.

Mortgage brokers then seize the opportunity and "induce" subprime borrowers to take up mortgage loans with special 'teaser' rate.

Mortgage loans are then "packed" into CDOs. Banks purchase subprime loans & take on CDOs in pursuit of higher yields.
.
And guess what? Some sincere folks in other parts of the world are happily buying up all these 'bad debts' through their trusted financial institutions and advisors with their hard earned money.
.
So the trillion dollar question is: Where will this trail leads us to in the coming months?
.
Stay tune, my friend. More coming...

Countrywide Again

This is your final warning!

Many market experts and analysts have been warning us about this. To see the storm, you no longer need the flat-screen window to the world that you get each day from CNBC , Bloomberg or CNN. You don't even require the newspaper. Why?

Because I have reasons to believe that you can FEEL it right under your feet. That's where you'll see the U.S. housing market — the source of most of America's wealth — starting to crumble before your very eyes. That's where you'll see large chunks of the U.S. mortgage market — the lifeblood of millions of Americans — being swept away by a flood of home foreclosures and mortgage company collapses.

Some of the recent casualties of the subprime fiasco includes big names like American Home Mortgage of Long Island, bankrupt 6th August; Home Banc of Atlanta, bankrupt 10 th August; and Aegis Mortgage of Houston, bankrupt 13th August.

Now, according to Merrill Lynch, there's another candidate for failure which is many times larger — Countrywide Financial! The company has exhausted its $11.5 billion in credit lines. That was fast! It has just received another $2 billion capital infusion from Bank of America. And it's still not enough.

Indeed, one top Bank of America executive privately believes that up to ninety percent of the country's Alt-A mortgages, a staple of Countrywide Financial's business, will eventually default. If so, it will easily crush all the cash and credit of many Countrywides. Why do I believe Countrywide is doomed to failure?

Because Countrywide CEO Angelo Mozilo himself sees the industry and the economy going down for the count. Just last week on CNBC, he admitted that the mortgage crisis striking America today is "one of the greatest panics I've ever seen in 55 years in financial services." He acknowledged that the troubles in the industry are going to continue. He even predicted that the housing downturn is so bad it's likely to drag the economy into a recession.

If someone of his experience and exposure (55 years) believes it is going to be rough, you better believe it. Afterall, you have got nothing to lose and everything to gain if the market heads south and you are out in cash instead of equities. Right?

So, stay safe, sane and most importantly, solvent!

The Young Lion

The Young Lion
By Orison Swett Marden

A young lion, as the fable runs, was one day playing alone in the forest while his mother slept. As the different objects attracted his attention, he thought he would explore a bit and see what the great world beyond his home was like. Before he realized it, he had wandered so far that he could not find his way back. He was lost.

Very much frightened, he ran frantically in every direction calling piteously for his mother, but no mother responded. Weary with his wanderings, he did not know what to do, when a sheep, whose offspring had been taken from her, hearing his pitiful cries, made friends with the lost lion, and adopted him.

The sheep became very fond of her foundling, which in a short while grew so much larger than herself that at times she was almost afraid of it. The foster mother and her adopted lived very happily together, until one day a magnificent lion appeared, sharply outlined against the sky, on the top of an opposite hill. He shook his tawny inane and uttered a terrific roar, which echoed through the hills.

The sheep mother stood trembling, paralyzed with fear. But the moment this strange sound reached his ears, the young lion listened as though spellbound, and a strange feeling which he had never before experienced surged through his being until be was all a-quiver. The lion's roar had touched a chord in his nature that had never before been touched. It aroused a new force within him which he had never felt before.

New desires, a strange new consciousness of power possessed him. A new nature stirred in him, and instinctively, without a thought of what he was doing, he answered the lion's call with a corresponding roar! Trembling with mingled fear, surprise and bewilderment at the new powers aroused within him, the awakened animal gave his foster mother a pathetic glance, and then, with a tremendous leap, started toward the lion on the hill.

The lost lion had found himself.

Up to this he had gamboled around his sheep mother just as though he were a lamb developing into a sheep, never dreaming he could do anything that his companions could not do, or that he had any more strength than the ordinary sheep. He never imagined that there was within him a power which would strike terror to the beasts of the jungle. He simply thought he was a sheep, and would run at the sight of a dog and tremb1e at the howl of a wolf. Now he was amazed to see the dogs, the wolves, and other animals which formerly had so terrified him flee from him.

There is in every normal human being a Sleeping lion. It is just a question of arousing it, just a question of something happening that will awaken us, stir the depths of our being, and arouse the sleeping power within us. Just as the young lion, after it had once discovered that it was a lion would never again be satisfied to live the life of a sheep, when we discover that we are more than mere clay, when we at last become Conscious that we are more than human, that we are gods in the making, we shall never again be satisfied to live the life of common clods of earth.

We shall feel a new sense of power welling up within us, a power which we never before dreamed we possessed, and never he quite the same again, never again he content with low-flying ideals, with a cheap success. Ever after we will aspire. We will look up, struggle up and on to higher and ever higher planes.

Sex Life Sucks

A guy was talking with his friend in a bar and told him, "My sex life sucks, just when things start to get good my wife gets tired and just quits".

His friends said, "I used to have the same problem but then I went out and bought a gun and put blank bullets in it."

The first guy said, "How does that help?", and his friend said, "When my wife gets tired and starts to slow down I fire it and she gets so scared her adrenaline gets going and she'll fuck all night."

So the first guy said I'm going to try it, and he did. He came back to the bar a couple weeks later and his friend said, "Where have you been? Did you try it?" and he says, "Yes, I tried it. I got home, put the gun under my pillow, and started to fuck my wife. Well, we were in the middle of some 69 and she got tired and started to stop so I shot it off.

His friend said, "So what happened?"

"She bit my dick off, shit in my face, and a naked man jumped out of my closet with his hands in the air."

Mistakes - Learn & Let Go

The famous Italian actress Sophia Loren is quoted as saying, "Mistakes are part of the dues one pays for a full life".
.
Most people are afraid to try new things in life because they think it will be a mistake or they will fail. Mistakes are part of a learning process. If you make a mistake, own up to it and correct it. You will know what you will need to do the next time.
.
I know and admit I am not perfect. I have made mistakes along the way. I've made mistakes with investing in stocks; mistakes in schools; mistakes in relationships. I took the bumps but I came back better, stronger and made more. This is just part of life. One shouldn't dwell on these mistakes. Learn from your mistakes and keep moving forward.
.
I have also learned to let go ... of the mistakes of others. A friend of mine pointed out that if I hang on to issues tightly, like grabbing a handful of sand with a clinched fist, I can hold little in it. But if I learn to let go gently and scope up a handful of sand, it can hold more (life).
.
I leave you with the famous words of Oscar Wilde: "Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes".
.
Yes, I will learn from my mistakes.
Yes, I will let go of other's mistakes, and learn from theirs too!
.

Is it Really that Big Deal?

Lets put things into perspective here. I know the whole world is talking, sleeping, eating, shiting, working, crying, bitching about the subprime woes. But lets take some time-out and evaluate the situation and study the statistics.
.
We have a source from above that showed just how much of what is in where. Take a look. The US subprime mortgage loans represents only a small portion of the entire mortgage loan market.
.
I will not try to talk you out of the seriousness of the situation. You have the faculty to analyze and evaluate. Do the maths. Is it really that big a deal? I don't know. Maybe we will find out as the following months unfold.

I have heard it over and over again when I was in church: "My God shall supply all my needs ...". I agree. But I also agree that He will supply and meet all my needs according to His wisdom and in His good season. That means I must trust in His goodness and timing, cos there is a reason and a season for everything under the sun.

So, have faith, my friends. God will surely supply all your real needs, really!

Normal Reaction

One day when the teacher walked to the black board, she noticed someone handwritten the word 'penis' in tiny small letters. She turned around, scanned the class looking for the guilty face. Finding none, she quickly erased it, and began her class.

The next day she went into the room, and she saw, in larger letters, the word 'penis' again on the black board. Again, she looked around in vain for the culprit, but found none, so she proceeded with the day's lesson.

Every morning, for about a week, she went into the classroom and found the same word written on the board, each day's word larger than the previous day's word. Finally, one day, she walked in, expecting to be greeted by the same word on the board, but instead, found the words,

"The more you rub it, the bigger it gets!"

The Subprime Situation Report II

As I mentioned earlier, the coming reset of outstanding mortgages will definitely put tremendous pressure on the overall US economy and the financial markets all around the world. Justification for this madness was the dispersal of risk. What do I mean by that?

As you will have probably read elsewhere, these loans were sliced and diced and repackaged and sold as mortgage-backed bonds. They were rated by Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s, often as high as AAA. These CDOs, as they are called, were then sold to investors such as hedge funds. These toxic investments are now spread throughout the world causing immeasurable contamination. But that's not all. What has made the whole situation so much worse is the excessive leverage!

Leverages are everywhere. To give an example of this, the Goldman Sachs funds that have been in great difficulty were leveraged by a factor of eight to ten times and therein lies the rub. Goldman Sachs, who deny bailing the fund out, have nonetheless injected $2 billion of their own money and persuaded outsiders to contribute a further billion, in so doing, have reduced the gearing to 3.5 times – still very rich!

What astounds us is that so many of the participants have been surprised at what has happened. They have the brightest brains and the most modern of computer systems. These computer systems were mentioned in a recent article in the Financial Times by GillianTett and Anuj Gangahar; they said that Goldman Sachs, renowned as one of the savviest players on Wall Street, had to admit that their flagship global equity fund lost over 30% of its value in just one week because of problems with its trading strategies created by computer models. In particular, the computers had failed to foresee recent market movements to such a degree that they labelled them a “25 – standard deviation event”; something that only happens once every 100,000 years or more, yet very recently several occurred on consecutive days!

The conclusion one must draw is that in some fashion or another this extraordinarily, but predictable, chain of events that could only end in disaster are like alchemy, transformed when fed into complicated mathematical equations and crunched by computers to a one in 100,000 years or more probability of collapse. The fact that these computer programs have control over such huge amounts of money should send shivers through the system and bring a smile to Nassim Taleb’s face. Who is he?

Nassim Taleb makes a living out of betting on such rare events. He is famous for his books “Fooled by Randomness” and subsequently “The Black Swan”. He uses the symbolic “black swan” as an example of a rare event and explains that just because you haven’t seen a black swan doesn’t mean that one does not exist, as indeed they do!

So, don't say I never say okay. Prepare to meet Ms Black Swan...soon.

The Subprime Situation Report

Six months ago at about the time the housing market in America peaked, we learned that subprime mortgages represented 13% of the total of their mortgage stock – quite incredible!

Financial institutions knowingly lent, at artificially “low start” rates of interest, 100% mortgages to people with bad credit records; not checking on anything, accepting the word of the applicant about income and all other financial matters. Given the figures quoted above, they did this on a massive scale. This would be understandable if it was the result of rogue bankers but it was not. It was a deliberate thought through business plan!

The rates of interest initially charged for many of these loans were not the correct rates but “teaser” rates - in other words, a lower rate of interest, well below the market, was charged with the unpaid amount accumulating to the debt. At a certain predetermined date, these mortgages are reset from when the full payment has to be made, not just on the original loan but also the accumulated amount of any unpaid interest.

The fact that these loans were unaffordable in the first place and even more unaffordable following the resetting, should come as no surprise. Huge numbers of these loans are still scheduled to be reset over the next few months which must lead to massive additional delinquencies. Listed below are figures indicating the size of the potential fold-up, starting from the current month of August and the numbers are billions! If you want to know why the market is running extra scared, one reason is the knowledge of this huge poisonous cloud hanging over it. Here we go:

August 2007 - US$52bn
September - US$58bn
October - US$55 bn
November - US$52bn
December - US$58bn
January 2008 - US$80bn
February - US$88bn
March - US$110bn
April - US$92bn
May - US$76bn
June - US$75bn
July - US$50bn

I suggest we adhere to a well-trusted motto from our good-old scout friend: "Be Prepared"!

Federal Funds Rate

Federal funds rate: What is it?

It is the interest rate that institutions pay when they borrow reserves overnight from each other. Banks borrow reserves in the federal funds market in order to meet reserve requirements set by the Federal Reserve, and to ensure adequate balances in their accounts at the Fed to cover checks and electronic payments that the Fed processes on their behalf.

Please note that changes in the federal funds rate often have a strong impact on other short-term rates. That's why everybody is watching this fed fund rate like nobody's business, which is currently standing at 5.25%. And guess who or what gets to decide this number should be altered from time to time? Or well at least 8 times a year?

Right. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). She is the Federal Reserve's top monetary policy-making body! So don't pray pray huh!!! More next entry. Watch for it...

Cross Dressing

A wealthy couple had plans to go to an evening ball. So they advised their butler that they were giving him the evening off to do as he pleasd since they would be out until quite late.

The couple went to a ball and dinner. After an hour an a half, the wife told her husband that she was horribly bored and that she preferred to go home and finish some work for the next day. The husband responded that he had to stay for a few more hours to meet some very important people who were his new business partners.

So the wife went home alone and found the the butler spread out on the couch watching TV. She slowly moved towards hime and sat down very seductively. She then told him to come closer. Then even closer.

She moved forward and whispered in his ear "Take off my dress...".

"Now take off my bra."

"Next remove my shoes and stockings."

"Now remove my garter belt and panties."

She then looked deep into his eyes and in a sharp voice shouted "The next time I catch you wearing my clothes, you're fired".

The Discount Rate

The discount rate is the interest rate charged to commercial banks and other depository institutions on loans they receive from their regional Federal Reserve Bank's lending facility - the discount window.

The Federal Reserve Banks offer three discount window programs to depository institutions: primary credit, secondary credit, and seasonal credit, each with its own interest rate. All discount window loans are fully secured.

Under the primary credit program, loans are extended for a very short term (usually overnight) to depository institutions in generally sound financial condition.

Depository institutions that are not eligible for primary credit may apply for secondary credit to meet short-term liquidity needs or to resolve severe financial difficulties.

Seasonal credit is extended to relatively small depository institutions that have recurring intra-year fluctuations in funding needs, such as banks in agricultural or seasonal resort communities.

Now, the discount rate charged for primary credit (the primary credit rate) is set above the usual level of short-term market interest rates. (Because primary credit is the Federal Reserve's main discount window program, the Federal Reserve at times uses the term "discount rate" to mean the primary credit rate.)

The discount rate on secondary credit is above the rate on primary credit. The discount rate for seasonal credit is an average of selected market rates. Discount rates are established by each Reserve Bank's board of directors, subject to the review and determination of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. The discount rates for the three lending programs are the same across all Reserve Banks except on days around a change in the rate.

So, no more confusion now. We are NOT talking about the Fed Fund Rates, which I will touch on later. So stay tuned, stay safe, & most importantly, stay solvent!

The 11th Husband

A young man married a beautiful woman who had previously divorced 10 husbands. On their wedding night, she told her new husband to "Please be gentle; I'm still a virgin".

"What?" said the puzzled groom. "How can that be if you've been married ten times.?"

"Well, husband#1 was a Sales Representative; he kept telling me how great it was going to be.

"Husband # 2 was in Software Services; he was never really sure how it was suppose to function; but he said he'd look into it and get back with me.

Husband # 3 was from Field Services; he said that everything checked out diagnostically but he just couldn't get the system up.

Husband # 4 was in Telemarketing; even though he knew he had the order, he didn't know when he would be able to deliver.

Husband # 5 was an Engineer, he understood the basic process but he wanted three years to research, implement, and design a new state of the-art method.

Husband #6 was from Administration; he thought he knew how but he wasn't sure whether it was his job or not.

Husband # 7 was in Marketing; although he had a product, he was never sure how to position it.

Husband # 8 was a Psychiatrist; all he did was talk about it.

Husband # 9 was a Gynecologist; all he did was look at it.

Husband # 10 was a Stamp Collector; all he ever did was........ God I miss him.

But now that I've married you, I'm so excited".

"Wonderful", said the husband, "but why?"

"Your're with the "GOVERNMENT".. This time I KNOW I'M gonna get SCREWED."

Markets Rally on Fed Rate Cut

After a volatile morning yesterday, European markets received a lunchtime boost from the surprise decision by the US Federal Reserve to cut the discount rate by 50 basis points to 5.75%.

In London, the FTSE 100 rebounded over 3% following the announcement and was 205 points higher at 6,064 by Friday's close. Elsewhere in Europe, the Frankfurt DAX-30 climbed 108 points to end the day at 7,378 and the Paris CAC-40 closed 98 points higher at 5,363.

On Wall Street, stocks staged their biggest rally in four years. The Dow Jones opened nearly 300 points higher, at 13,127, and there were steep gains on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq!

Dangers to economic growth
The Fed cited the dangers posed to economic growth from deteriorating financial market conditions and tighter credit.

The discount rate – which applies to loans to commercial banks from regional Federal Reserve lending facilities – is separate from the federal funds rate, which remains at 5.25%. The move provides a short-term solution to the liquidity crisis currently facing financial institutions and will remain effective, said the bank, until the situation improves.

Oil and gold up, dollar down
In the commodities markets, the oil price jumped as investor concerns over slowing economic growth subsided. Crude futures were almost 2% higher at $72.33 in New York and Brent spot had risen to $69.54 in London.

Copper also ended its three-day losing streak. Copper for delivery in three months jumped over 4% to $7,020 a tonne on the London metals exchange. Fellow metals gold and silver were also firmer today as the dollar fell.

Sterling had risen as high as 1.9935 against the dollar and was also up against both the euro and the yen.

Over the next few entries, I will attempt to explain what exactly the Fed is doing and its implication to the financial market at large. It should be interesting. Stay tuned!

Hot from the Oven - Fed Cut Rate!!!

Release Date: August 17, 2007

For immediate release
To promote the restoration of orderly conditions in financial markets, the Federal Reserve Board approved temporary changes to its primary credit discount window facility. The Board approved a 50 basis point reduction in the primary credit rate to 5-3/4 percent, to narrow the spread between the primary credit rate and the Federal Open Market Committee's target federal funds rate to 50 basis points. The Board is also announcing a change to the Reserve Banks' usual practices to allow the provision of term financing for as long as 30 days, renewable by the borrower. These changes will remain in place until the Federal Reserve determines that market liquidity has improved materially. These changes are designed to provide depositories with greater assurance about the cost and availability of funding. The Federal Reserve will continue to accept a broad range of collateral for discount window loans, including home mortgages and related assets. Existing collateral margins will be maintained. In taking this action, the Board approved the requests submitted by the Boards of Directors of the Federal Reserve Banks of New York and San Francisco.

Too Much...Simple Anatomy of a MeltDown!

We are in the midst of a financial crisis. This is Not a correction; Not a downturn. Not a slump. Not a blip. I think this is a full-blown meltdown. And the causes? Too much….

Too much housing speculation:
The Federal Reserve pumped the economy full of easy money after the tech bubble burst. That money found its way into the housing market, fueling a speculative bubble like no other in modern U.S. history. Now that bubble is popping, too … and the fallout is spreading throughout the financial markets.

Too much stupid lending:
Residential mortgage lenders gave loans to any moron with 2 legs during the boom. Now, delinquencies & foreclosures are surging, & so are loan losses. Stupid lending wasn't confined to home mortgages, either. The commercial mortgage & leveraged buyout markets have seen their fair share of excesses. Concern over these higher-risk loans is now hammering Wall Street.

Too much financial leverage:
Hedge funds, Wall Street firms, everyday speculators — they all borrowed huge amounts of money to boost returns. But what happens when the investments head south? All that leverage enhances LOSSES.

So, in a nutshell, reckless investors, lenders, & borrowers gambled with easy money & lost. The result is the unfolding meltdown you're seeing in the corporate bond market … the mortgage bond market … the stock market … virtually everywhere. It's not pleasant. It's not fun. And, from everything I see, it's not over. But you shouldn't be surprised by any of this.

The tell-tale signs of financial panic began weeks ago. Since then, I'm sad to say, things have only deteriorated further. Almost every single day, we learn of another mortgage company facing funding problems or another lending market getting roiled.

For example, you heard of Countrywide? Actually I just got to knw about this company recently. Countrywide Financial (CFC) is the largest mortgage lender in the U.S.. She recently experienced a bout of funding turmoil. The company reportedly had trouble selling a form of short-term debt called commercial paper. It tapped into an $11.5 billion credit line to raise money instead.

Countrywide's bond holders are worried about a potential default. I can see why: Fitch Ratings & Moody's Investors Service both cut Countrywide's credit ratings. And one Merrill Lynch analyst went so far as to say the lender could be forced into bankruptcy. The stock has plunged as a result, leaving it down about 55% year-to-date!

Meanwhile, a Canadian firm called Coventree Inc. announced that the market turmoil has prevented it from selling asset-backed commercial paper (ABCP). This ABCP is a form of short-term debt backed by things like car loans, credit card receivables, & mortgages. Problem is, the company is the biggest non-bank issuer of this kind of paper in Canada, & it needed more than $700 million in emergency funds because of the problems. Other firms — at least 16 according to Canadian ratings company DBRS — are having similar issues. That's a sign of a real liquidity freeze!

Now, elsewhere, the London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR) just surged to its highest level since 1998. This kind of move indicates that banks are scared to lend each other money even on a very short-term basis.

At the same time, yields on three-month U.S. Treasury bills plunged almost three-quarters of a percentage point (72 basis points) at one point yesterday. That was the largest decline in any one day since the stock market crashed in October 1987! Even in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, yields fell only 39 basis points. That means the financial panic we're seeing now is even worse than we saw in September 2001!

Clearly, the housing market is still slumping. The National Association of Home Builders just released its latest monthly survey of builder sentiment. The overall index sank to 22 in August from 24 in July. That was below the 23 expected by analysts & the worst reading in any month since January 1991, when the index touched an all-time low of 20.

I think we're in for a 1998-style rout … and that means further declines are likely. But then again, I could be wrong. I sometimes can and will. So do your own research. Bottom line: These are dangerous times — and you should take steps to protect yourself.

Elbow

A man is in a hotel lobby. He wants to ask the clerk a question. As he turns to go to the front desk, he accidentally bumps into a woman beside him and as he does, his elbow goes into her breast. They are both quite startled.

The man turns to her and says, "Ma'am, if your heart is a soft as your breast, I know you'll forgive me."

She replies, "If your penis is as hard as your elbow, I'm in room 436."

Success and the Search for it

People get very caught up in the search for success rather than doing what they already know how to do and then doing it until it works. If you struggle with the doing, then you need to visit the WHY.
- John Kanary

Your success is not a matter of doing many things, it is about doing a couple of things exceptionally well and everyone can learn to do that.

Ugliest Baby

A woman gets on a bus with her baby.

The bus driver says: "That's the ugliest baby that I've ever seen. Ugh!"

The woman goes to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her: "The driver just insulted me!"

The man says: "You go right up there and tell him off ... go ahead, I'll hold your monkey for you."

Killer of Goals and Dreams

What is the no.1 killer of goals and dreams?

PROCRASTINATION!

Merriam Webster defines procrastination as follows: "to put off intentionally and habitually".

If your procrastination is intentional maybe you really don't want to achieve your goals or dreams. In other words you don't want it bad enough. But what happens if your procrastination is a habit? If your procrastination is a habit of yours, it is easy to deal with versus intentional procrastination.

When breaking any habit you have two choices. Go cold turkey, or break the habit using a system, which is utilized over time. Cold turkey only works some of the time. Using a system is for the long term. Let's apply the system to a real life situation. Here's the scenario: The house is a mess on a consistent basis. Messy to the point where it is now overwhelming and therefore you put off cleaning the house. The solution is to create system.

I use the Rule of 15. All you need to do is just clean or organize the particular room that is cluttered only 15 minutes a day. At the end of the week you will have spent over 1.5 hours cleaning/organizing the cluttered room. The goal of cleaning/organizing will be achieved or close to it at the end of the week.

Imagine if you applied the same Rule of 15 to your financial goals. If you spent only 15 minutes a day you will have spent close to 8 hours a month towards your goal. Now, how many minutes or hours per day do you currently spend trying to achieve your goals or dreams? Utilizing a daily system to address your needs can break the habit of procrastination. What goals and dreams do you desire but will never achieve because of procrastination?

In the famous words of Seneca, "While we are postponing, lifespeeds by". Don't let procrastination rule your life and don't let life speed by you. We only go around once.

Integrity Flows from Character

Character is who you are when no one is watching.
- Anonymous

And EagleBoy must add:

Integrity is what you do when no one is supervising.

You do what you are, and you are not necessary what you do. Since what you do almost always flows out from who you are, then integrity must flow out of character.

Dignity

Dignity is like a perfume; those who use it are scarcely conscious of it.

Mm..Well...(Alright)

Mm..Well...(Alright)

Mm..Well...(Alright)
Mm..Well...(Alright)

Freedom!

William Wallace:
It's all for nothing if you don't have freedom.
*****
.
William Wallace:
There's a difference between us. You think the people of this country exist to provide you with position. I think your position exists to provide those people with freedom. And I go to make sure that they have it.
*****
.
William Wallace:
I AM William Wallace! And I see a whole army of my country men, here, in defiance of tyranny. You've come to fight as free men, and free men you are. What will you do with that freedom? Will you fight?
.
Soldier: Against that? No, we will run, and we will live.
.
William Wallace: Aye, fight and you may die, run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM! [crowd cheers]
*****
.
William Wallace: Every man dies, not every man really lives.
*****
.
William Wallace: We all end up dead, it's just a question of how and why.
*****
.
Royal Magistrate: The prisoner wishes to say a word.
William Wallace: [last line he is able to speak before he dies - and in spite of agonizing pain under torture, he shouts this:]

FREEEEE-DOMMMMMM!!

To Build a What?

This year's National Day Parade Floating March-Pass. Impressive huh!
Usually held in the Singapore National Stadium, Padang, for the first time in 2007, it will be held in Marina Bay. Future NDP will be held there until the new sports hub is completed around 2011.
.
We, the citizens of Singapore;
Pledge ourselves as one united people
Regardless of Race, Language or Religion;
To build a Democratic Society;
Based on Justice and Equality;
So as to achieve Happiness, Prosperity and Progress for our Nation.
.
Sound familiar? It's our National Pledge, you m***n!
.
Back in 1997, I once heard a US professor sharing his idea on progress of the human civilisation during his visit to one of the so-called top institution of learning - NUS (aka "Nothing Up Stairs"). He shared that in order for any society to progress, three pre-requisites must be present: Freedom, Justice, and Benevolence.
.
In order for a society to grow, there must be ample freedom, both of thoughts and ideologies, as well as speech and expression. Only then can new ideas ferment, grow, develop, and come to being. A stifling environment will cut the oxygen off the ideas-supply line, which eventually, the society will suffocate and die. China is a good example. The suppression of new ideas had kept the country from developing and it had cost them dearly over the last 60 years!
.
With freedom, new ideas build on one another, then spring forth more new and more dynamic ideas, and so on. Without freedom, the power faculty of the society, the Mind got assassinated in the cradle and leave us with an empty faculty building. Result: Nobody thinks critically, creatively, and constructively anymore. Boxed mentality. Media-driven thinking and me-focused analysis. "What's in for me" becomes the norm. The power of the day gets to decide what and how you think. Sometimes in thinking of an idea, it is good to consider the opposite flank of thoughts. And I think the opposite of Freedom is not bondage, but oppression!
.
Once you garner freedom, you need to pack in Justice. Without Justice, ideas launched & landed in the wrong hands will be taken advantage of and manipulated. One's idea to create wealth is stolen by another. Who would like to contribute ideas anymore? Once in a while, you may have experience the dilemma of whether to put forth an idea which may be beneficial to your company. But on second thought, you hold back, right? Why? Because your that bloody idiot boss will steal the idea you present and claim it as his or her own. Sickening, isn't it? Worst still, that bastard/ bitch terminate you later, because you are a threat to his or her career advancement. Disgusting. Result: Nobody shares anything, anymore, anywhere. It is a controlled way of governing ideas. Selective idea formation. Is that Justice? The opposite of Justice? No, it is not injustice, but tyranny! Think about that.
.
Then there is Benevolence - the desire to do good to others or acts of kindness and generous sharing. When you have a society that is thinking and coming up with new and strong ideas, and that there is a platform or structure to encourage the franchise of those ideas, you see progress. But such progression will not last long, if benevolence is absense. One man's idea resulted in wealth creation for that one man is hardly progression unless he learns to share with others. Result: Nobody cares, nothing more, nothing less, nothing else. Ignorance due to lack of ideas and information leads to a syndrone call "I don't know". Apathy is a "I don't care" mentality built on the foundation of a non-benevolent society. And you know what, the opposite of benevolence is actually not apathy, but self indulgence!
.
Okay, since it is my country's nationhood and independence day, I will be glad to say we have progressed, to some extent, in the development of the above three cornerstones. But there is still much room for growth and stretching, and there is no room for complacency. Step up for the 21st century, Singaporeans. I am concerned for my little ones who will be the future citizens of a new age. And despite of technology advancement, these 3 cornerstones don't change. That's why they are called cornerstones!
.
Happy Birthday, Singapore!
.
Disclaimer: Though fictionally I am a true blue citizen of Eagle-Land, I was borned and breed here in Singapore. So by default, I am a citizen by birth. But by divine design, I am a Rebel!!!
So wanna hear Eagle-Land's Citizen's Pledge?
We, the eaglitizen of Eagle-Land,
Pleage ourselves as one united Flock.
Regardless of feathers, becks and telons,
To build a Benevolence Eagle-ciety.
Based on Justice and Freedom to Soar.
So as to achieve happiness, prosperity and progress for our future eaglets.

Must Love Dogs

Plot:
Sarah Nolan, a preschool teacher in her thirties, is recently divorced. Her family's new pet project is to find her a boyfriend. After a series of disastrous, but hilarious, dates she decides to swear off dating for good. Her well-meaning family and friends are not going to let her give-up quite so easily though. Her sister enrolls her in on-line dating and includes the description of "must love dogs." She loves dogs but doesn't own one of her own, so she borrows her brother's dog to meet Jake Anderson at the dog park; he, too, had to borrow a dog. It's a hit-and-miss beginning - but could true love wag its tail for these two? You bet.
.
As always, the movie had a happy ending. One of the best line I heard came from Jake:
.
"I think your heart grows back bigger ya know, once you get the shit beat out of you. And the universe lets your heart expand that way, cause thats the function of all this pain and heartache that you go through and you gotta go through that to come out to a better place."
.
In the movie, Jake experienced the heartache of relationships & the pain of rejection. Truth is, all true lovers have in one way or another attended lessons from the school of pain. Fact is: Many don't complete their training well or graduate. They drop out, then drop in later ... People fall in love, get hurt, then fall out of love...then in love, hurt again, then out of love. In my time, people call it repeat. You don't get to advance to the next level until you fulfill the current level of training.
.
You see, as in the movie, my heart will grow back bigger (and stronger) everytime I bounce back from a hurting relationship. It will expand to accomodate the future as I embrace it one step at a time. I believe pain has its purpose: to instruct us in matters of the heart, to be emotionally mature and volitionally strong. Let Pain be your tutor. As for me:
..
I will go through it.
I will let my hurting heart expand.
I will come out and discover a better place.
.
I will.

If You'll Just Learn How To...

A wealthy man came home from a gambling trip and told his wife that he had lost their entire fortune and that they'd have to drastically alter their life-style.

"If you'll just learn to cook," he said, "we can fire the chef."

"Okay," she said. "And if you'll just learn how to make love, we can fire the gardener."

Suddenly the drunk stands up and yells, "ATTENTION ALL" and farts loudly.

The drunks replies," I'm sorry I didn't know it was her turn."

Don't Tease Old Ladies

Defense Attorney:
Will you please state your age?

Little Old Lady:
I am 86 years old.

Defense Attorney:
Will you tell us, in your own words, what happened the night of April 1st?

Little Old Lady:
There I was, sitting there in my swing on my front porch on a warm spring evening, when a young man comes creeping up on the porch and sat down beside me.

Defense Attorney:
Did you know him?

Little Old Lady:
No, but he sure was friendly.

Defense Attorney:
What happened after he sat down?

Little Old Lady:
He started to rub my thigh.

Defense Attorney:
Did you stop him?

Little Old Lady:
No, I didn't stop him.

Defense Attorney:
Why not?

Little Old Lady:
It felt good. Nobody had done that since my Albert died some 30 years ago.

Defense Attorney:
What happened next?

Little Old Lady:
He began to rub my breasts.

Defense Attorney:
Did you stop him then?

Little Old Lady:
No, I did not stop him.

Defense Attorney:
Why not?

Little Old Lady:
His rubbing made me feel all alive and excited. I haven't felt that good in years!

Defense Attorney:
What happened next?

Little Old Lady:
Well, by then, I was feeling so "spicy" that I just laid down and told him "Take me, young man. Take me now!"

Defense Attorney:
Did he take you?

Little Old Lady:
Hell, no! He just yelled, "April Fool!" And that's when I shot him, the little bastard.

What is "It"?

Here's a short quiz:

"It" doesn't happen overnight.
"It" takes time and work.
"It" requires guidance and can not do it alone.
"It" requires tenacity and patience.
"It" requires the ability to adapt and change.
"It" requires perseverance in the face of odds.

What is "It"?

"It" is your dreams, successes and passion.

I don't know many people who are overnight successes. I don't know anybody who made it to the top without paying his or her dues. Maybe I don't many people??? Maybe.

But this I know: that on the road to success one must weather storms. Sometimes a bad storm will hit and you must adapt and change to the oncoming winds. Sometimes on the road to success and happiness you have to hunker down and persevere the storm of negativity, endure the showers of criticism & stomach a load of skepticism.

But after all is said and done, if you can stand tall, you will have learned more about yourself, and you are that much closer to achieving your dream. If you are stuck in a storm and need some guidance and direction, give me a shout here.

I will end with an appropriate quote I have in my collections:

"Nature always takes her time. Great oaks don't become great overnight. They also lose a lot of leaves, branches and bark in the process of becoming great."

- Andrew Matthews

Because of Me

"Things are not happening to you. Things are happening because of you".

Unknown Author

EagleBoy chooses to interpret the above as because of me, good things are happening around me. Because of me, things that benefit others are taking place. Because of me, someone's life is better, happier, fuller. Because of me.

Now how's that?
